Woodland Bronze Turkeys ™
The Hogan’s Farm Traditional Free Range Woodland Bronze™ are part of our Charlesfort Turkey™ Range.
These turkeys are named after Charlesfort Estate ( where Hogan’s Farm is based) and the Woodland Bronze live freely amongst the grass and woodlands surrounding Charlesfort Estate.
A slow rearing turkey breed, this particular bronze breed is from a strain of the Original American Wild Black Turkey. By Christmas, the Woodland Bronze will be at least seven months old not 10-12 weeks like some other turkeys. This natural process of slow rearing, natural free -foraging produces a turkey like no other in terms of depth in flavour and succulence.
The Woodland Bronze have the highest department of Agriculture certification – Traditional Free Range.
Adding to what makes a Hogan’s Farm Woodland Bronze ™ turkey so unique compared to other free range turkeys in Ireland is that these turkeys love outside all day and night.
From one day old up to six weeks of age our Woodland Bronze are carefully cared for in their own heated shed.
Little by little, we bring them outside to explore the vast grass and woodlands which they will call home.
From about six weeks old they become used to their outdoor surroundings and leave their shed for good to live all day and night with the total freedom to roam their natural outdoor surroundings 24 hours a day.
Our Woodland with its mature oak, beech and chestnut trees along scattered openings is the ideal home for the Woodland Bronze.
You can find these happy turkeys perched along the grass banks from dusk to dawn where not a peep is heard.
Once dawn breaks, you can hear their chirps and gobbles whilst they fly off the banks to go explore for the day.
The Woodland Bronze are fed a varied diet. Along with the normal turkey cereal based diet ,which contains all the vitamins and nutrients they require, they also feed off the natural pastures , foraging from forest floor, feeding off the foliage and on the berries from the holly trees.
To keep life a little interesting , we plant kale and give them treats such as apples and carrots which they absolutely love.
Visually , we think these turkeys are some of the best looking birds around !
Their body feathers are generally dark brown overall with a coppery sheen that becomes more obvious as they grow older.
Unlike the domesticated standard white turkeys but like all wild turkeys, the Woodland bronze can fly.
Flying close to the ground for short distances they are quite agile fliers. Early in the morning and late in the evening before sunset are the best times to see this spectacle.
As we want the Woodland Bronze to live and grow in their natural environment we only rear in small numbers for Thanksgiving and Christmas, hence a limited quantity available.
Our most exclusive breed to date, the Woodland Bronze are available to order online for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as being available in some of our select butchers .
